RE: Towing with a 2008 Dodge Megacab 3500.
Pulling a 28.5' 5th wheel, running about 13,000 lb, with an '06 SRW 4x4. Gets around 13 mpg mostly towing. Reused hitch from long box, so have to watch cab clearance, backing in tight, but hasn't been an issue yet. Love the room in the back, I'm 6'7" and junior is 6'3" and can sit behind me with room to spare. Puppies like the room, and the split seat lets them see out while laying down.
RE: The Great Truck Camper Road Trip to Banff/Jasper
Thanks to OP and sirdrakejr. I live about 3 hours N of Jasper, an have visited many times, and still seen a new perspective through anothers' eyes. I don't get onto the T/C side much, so I liked the double.
RE: switchable back up lights on truck
I've added a switch to the truck b/u lights, and just added a 50 A relay to the power feed to the brake controller. My trailer brakes seem sensitive(not :( )in reverse, so I used to get out and unplug them every time.
RE: Dumbest thing you've ever done while RVing with your Rig?
Last Fri. morning, heading into the May long, we're hooked up in the driveway with a new TV. Pull down the drive, turn right, down the slight hill in front of house, U-turn at first intesection, UP the smae slope, and prk to finish shuffling vehicles onto drive. Get DW loaded and pull out. A loud crash, followed by the sound of dragging metal. A quick glimpse in the mirror of the new TV seems to say trailer moved. Only spot to pull over is about 3 more houses, on wrong side. Get out, look, sliding hitch was'nt locked in place. On the hitch I have, there is no stop to prevent hitch from exiting the rails rearward. Only luck stopped any carnage. The hitch install finished the day before, and previous TV was a longbox that never used the slide feature. It's on the checklist now :)
RE: Nose Police
Looks like a good reason to buy a new truck to me :B:B:B:B
That's what brought this all about. Buying a new TV is like buying work. New TV is 5" higher, so axle flip. While tires off, rebuild brakes, repack bearings, re-bush and new hardware. Transfer hitch from old TV to new unit. Trailer is taller now, so build platform for bottom of steps(may change steps). Congrats to the few who read the post before replying, and saw the humour intended. The trailer was moved with the OLD TV before the hitch was set up in the new truck. The 78 is a single wheel F-350, that pulled this unit with ease, with about a 2" squat under load. I finally got it paid off, and felt uncomfortable without a truck payment. Humour Alert
Nose Police
This is what happens when you have to use the old truck to pick up the trailer after the axle flip http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll86/Darryl_Rita/New%20Truck/Tailup3.jpg
RE: your thoughts on a wing ?
Best value is bug deflector, but it is easier to clean front of 5er from truck bed, than air deflector from ground. I'm over 6' 7" and let the deflector go with my last truck.
Buying work(new TV)
Signed paperwork on a '06 Megacab 3500 4x4 on Fri. so now the work begins getting it set up for the trailer. Crazy truck is 5" higher, so axle flipping, step changes, etc. Will try to get pics working.http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll86/Darryl_Rita/050220081944.jpg height=480 width=600
RE: Edmonton to Dawson Creek - What to see ???
#22 North to Hwy 16 via Drayton Valley would be one option. This is a two lane road with some scenery. If your looking for scenery, a better bet would be 11 west to 93 North. This will take you thru the Ice Fields and into Jasper, with scenery wall to wall. If speed is your need, when you get to Hwy 16, coming from Drrayton, continue N on 22 until Hwy 43. 22 stays 2 lane, but 43 is mostly 4 lane with good traffic flow. Depending on the time of year, and your determination, the days can offer almost 18 hours of good driving light, so 1day is possible, but if you are site seeing, that will slow you down. Rough guess, your looking at about 500 miles on Hwy 22/43
RE: FIFTH WHEEL UPGRADE
I have painted the plastic trim pieces on our '98 unit using a Krylon paint for plastic (forget the specific name). It has held up for three years now and has held up well. The paint was advertised as for plastic furniture, which I think is a similiar plastic. We have also suffered from stripe peeling, which have left glossy areas under the decal. Our manufacturer had a rep in the area last summer, and we got to talking about the problem. He offered to check in the plant for any left-over decal kits. Within 1 month, we had a full decal kit in the mail, free of charge. BIL works in a decal shop and will reapply the new ones in the spring. I had talked to him about cutting new ones to cover the area where the gloss was and he said it was do-able, but harder($$$) than installing matching, precut decals.
RE: Oh no ! Not another weight question.
I have pulled heavy in the past with farm equipment, so slow, shorter trips. I have seen wear on the leaf springs where the shorter leaf rubs on the one above it. I have also seen wear on the spring eye/shackle bolts. These were the sneak up on you kind of wear, but wear nonetheless. Tires seemed to be the ones that made for the most bad language, as beyond a physical check, and pressure check, they often gave little sign of short lives.
RE: Question for experianced Alaska'n RV'rs
With a bumper pull toy hauler, I would lean toward that unit. With an aluminum quad deck on the truck, the trailer can stay in the CG, and the quads can travel to the trail head. With a TC, the whole thing gotta go. We're just south of mile 0, Alaska hiway, and have places that rent these decks. As an eg. check out http://www.marathondecks.com/index.htmlhttp://www.marathondecks.com/index.html
RE: Identify this electrical part for me please
Ya gotta love the PO (previous owner) syndrome. We had a vehicle that had most of the wiring replaced with one colour, not connected all that well. Finally got tired of the fire works and smell, and gutted it and replaced the whole mess, one wire at a time.
